BENNINGTON — A Southern Vermont College professor and a Northshire Bookstore publishing coordinator have received an award for their collaboration project, the Shires Press Series, which created publishing opportunities for undergraduate students.
Daisy Levy, associate professor and chair of the Hunter Division of Humanities, and publishing coordinator Debbi Wraga were awarded the New England Publishing Collaboration (NEPCo) Award for second place as well as the audience choice award for the project.
The project took place in 2014, where the Northshire and Shire Press partnered with SVC to allow a four-course program to give students hands-on experience with book publishing.
Thanks to the project, nine books have been published so far and three authors are slated to be published in May 2019.
The award ceremony, presented by Bookbuilders, included ten presentations. Levy and Wraga's award was second to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
"We are so proud of the program and this partnership, and being able to represent Southern Vermont College and Northshire Bookstore in such a positive way," Levy said. "The whole event was intensely validating, not just for me and [Wraga], but we hope for both the Bookstore [and Shire Press] and Southern Vermont College— not to mention all the individuals who are part of supporting and building this program from the ground up."
