The Left Bank

Join Left Bank in celebrating the legacy of renowned local author Shirley Jackson for an artists' reception June 22nd from 4-6 p.m. This year's gallery show finds curatorial inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s 1954 novel, "The Bird’s Nest," which portrays a young museum curator with multiple personality disorder. In this fascinating narrative, disparate personalities of the main character have the effect of twigs, mud and fluff, whose only reason to be together is that they were interwoven like a bird’s nest to form a struggling woman. The resulting portrayal reveals the dizzying complexities of the human mind and an environment that leads the viewer to question what exactly is holding each character together.

Our Bird’s Nest portrait show asks the viewers to consider the portrait through a Shirley Jackson lens: how is a portrait built? What does a portrait reveal about the subject, and how much of it is about the artist herself? All of our personalities contain multiple facets, or twigs and straw, that come together to form a complex being. How much of this is revealed in one portrait? Or multiple portraits of the same person?

Artists include: Mark Barry, Forest Byrd, Anna Crabtree, Peter Crabtree, Lee Gallagher, Aimee LaPorte, Lodiza Lapore, Caitilin McAdoo, Claudia McNulty, Madalyn Olson, Rob Randall, Rhonda Ratray, Daisy Rockwell, Teru Simon, Jill VanOrden, Lulu Wiley, Ed Winterhalter and Greg Winterhalter
