Wood, Jozefiak tied for 8th at Vermont Am

RUTLAND — The 2019 Vermont Amateur Championships began Tuesday and a familiar golfer tops the leaderboard at the end of the day.

Two-time defending champion, Rutland Country Club's Drake Hull, leads after shooting a 4-under 66 in his opening round.

Many local golfers are competing this week in Rutland.

From Mount Anthony Country Club, Aaron Wood, Cory Jozefiak, Stephen Carknard, Ryan O'Neill, Taylor Bellemare, Jack Bushee, Matt Smith and Logan Ripley are competing.

Manchester Country Club is being represented by Josh Cohen and William Tate, while Dorset Field Club is represented by Keith Komline, Harrison Digangi and Eddie Lewicki.

From Ekwanok Country Club, Paul Heffernan is in the field, and from The Golf Club at Equinox, there is Brett Grigsby.

A pair of local golfers sit in the top 10 after the first day, as Wood and Jozefiak are locked with four other golfers in a tie for eighth place with a 2-over round of 72.

Wood had four birdies, with two on the front nine holes and two on the back nine. Jozefiak had three birdies on the day.

"I'm the soccer guy in the golfer's group, with one guy at UConn (Logan Broyles) and the other who played at Rhode Island (Pat Pelletier)," Wood said. "I hit it well, and the greens weren't too fast. Some of the pins were tough, but the conditions were perfect."

Wood said his goal is to put in four rounds of good golf over the three days of the tournament.

"I don't know if anyone can catch Drake, but I just want to be consistent," said Wood, the Arlington girls soccer coach.
