With top starters out, BBA falls to CougarHawks

MANCHESTER — Burr and Burton girls hockey coach Ed Lewicki was missing his three captains and starters on Wednesday night.

With Stella Turner, Kilo Francomb and Miranda Eisenman all sick, Lewicki had to dig deep into his bench.

The first period was rough, as BBA allowed four goals in the first 15 minutes. But they only allowed a single goal in the final two periods of a 5-0 loss to the CougarHawks, the Champlain Valley and Mount Mansfield co-op.

Riley Erdman got CVU on the board two minutes in, assisted by Tess Everett. Two minutes later, Erdman scored again, poking one past BBA goalie Lola Herzog for a 2-0 lead.

Herzog, playing despite some sickness of her own, had a great game in goal with 37 stops on 42 shots.

At the other end, Grace Ferguson only had to make six saves.

Kiley McClure made it 3-0 a few minutes later, getting a rebound and putting it back. Everett ended the barrage with 1:37 left in the first, tipping the puck off Herzog and in.

BBA continued to fight in the second period and kept CVU off the scoreboard.

Emma Hall had BBA's best scoring chance, a 1-on-1, but a second defender for the CougarHawks poked the puck away.

In the third, CVU scored an insurance goal, Alicia Veronneau stuffing a wraparound past Herzog.

BBA is 2-12 on the year, but hope to be back to full strength on Saturday against Harwood.

"They are the No. 1 team in Tier II, so we have to be ready to go," Lewicki said.
