Umphlett, Page finish in top 200 at NE XC Championship

BELFAST, Maine — Coming off a strong regular season run, two Mount Anthony Union cross country athletes brought their talents to Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Maine for the New England Championship meet.

Sophomore Sarah Umphlett and junior Evan Page competed against runners from across the region at Saturday's meet. Both Patriots' runners placed in the top 200 of finishers in the 5k run.

Umphlett finished 126th in the girl's race with a time of 20:10.81. Page finished 194th in the boy's race with a time of 17:43.17.

Julia Robitaille of Manchester West in Manchester, New Hampshire finished first in the girl's 5k with a time of 17:31.65. Drew Thompson of Fairfield Prep in Fairfield, Connecticut was tops for the boys with a time of 15:16.66.

Kristiansen breaks record

GORHAM, Maine — Southern Vermont College cross country athlete Annika Kristiansen, who attends Bennington College, did something that no other women in program history has done: run a 6,000-meter race in under 24 minutes.

Kristiansen accomplished the feat Saturday at the Division III New England Regional Qualifier as she finished with a time of 23:32.

The senior was the only SVC runner to compete in the meet, which included 393 of the region's top runners.

Kristiansen is now the owner of the Mountaineers' 5K and 6K recordsafter she set a new 5,000 meter mark last year. On Saturday, she surpassed SVC Hallof Famer Kathleen Newton to break the school best by 37 seconds.Kristiansen's time in Gorham was also 1:56 better than her previous personalrecord for a 6K race.

SVC competes in regionals

GOREHAM, Maine — Four Southern Vermont College men's cross country athletes competed in the New England Regional Qualifier Saturday at the University of Southern Maine.

Senior captain Marc Brandmeyer was the first Mountaineers finisher in the 8,000-meter race, notching a time of 27:39. That time is 11 seconds better than his previous best this season.

Freshman C.G. Holden, who attends Bennington College, was second on the team with a time of 29:33. SVC sophomore Davante Smith was third on the team with a time of 30:16, while junior Isaiah Backels finished at 33:11.
