BENNINGTON — The Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union's meal service for students will start Wednesday via delivery and pickup, filing a need during the time all SVSU schools are closed for families who rely on school meals.

All meals provided are free. Any child age 18 and under living within the SVSU boundaries is eligible. This includes the towns of Bennington (including the Village of North Bennington), Pownal, Shaftsbury and Woodford. This applies to all children attending private, public, or pre-k schools within the SVSU boundaries.

SVSU schools closed as of Tuesday, per an order from Gov. Phil Scott aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Scott announced Sunday that he would order closure of schools and cancellation of all school-related activities by Wednesday. The closures will last through April 6, but could go longer, according to the news release.

Breakfast and lunch meals will be provided for SVSU students simultaneously Monday through Friday via two distribution methods: delivery via modified bus routes and grab-and-go, said Jim Culkeen, superintendent of the SVSU, in an emailed update provided by Katie West, public information coordinator.

One person will be allowed to pick up meals for any child age 18 and under, via grab-and-go service at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School cafeteria exterior doors, between 8 a.m. and noon.

Delivery will also be available via modified bus routes — bus stop locations and approximate times for meal pick-ups will be posted in the "Meals for Students" section of the COVID-19 Updates and Resources page on www.svsu.org, according to the update.

Breakfasts and lunches will be prepared at the MAUMS production kitchen in a "safe and sanitary" environment by the Abbey Group's professional staff, according to the update.

"As we move forward, we will continue to explore and develop these systems to increase convenience," Culkeen said in the update. "Meal offerings will follow our basic `summer meals' program and we hope to be able to provide menus for upcoming meals."

The SVSU plans to communicate updates as they become available via K-12 alerts system, social media outlets, and posting to the SVSU website.

Those with questions are encouraged to email maureen@abbeygroup.net or stephanie@abbeygroup.net, or call 802-440-8700.

Information and the latest updates from the SVSU are available at www.svsu.org.
