Students' block printing art on display

BENNINGTON — A class at the Community College of Vermont has installed an art display of linoleum block prints at the Bennington campus.

The students, from the Intro to Studio Art Class, worked for four weeks, in and out of class, to complete the prints. The artwork will be on display in the building's central stairwell through at least next semester.

The idea for the "prinstillation" came after the class participated in the "Moth Migration Project," a crowd-sourced print installation project in New Mexico by artist Hilary Lorenz, last semester. Prior to this semester, teacher Sarah Pike approached CCV about putting up a similar display in Bennington.

"The students watched TED Talks about the ocean," said Pike. "The talks ranged from environmental concerns, unusual species, underwater communication, the shipping industry, and ocean art. From these talks they created relief prints... many, many prints."

On Wednesday, the students spent an hour in the morning setting up the display, which depicts a clean, healthy ocean at the top of the stairwell that becomes more and more polluted as one descends. The 10 students in the class each made at least 20 prints.

One of the students, Heidi Percey, who is studying psychology, said that she really enjoyed the process of making the art, even though it was challenging at times.

The 14,563 paper moths of the Moth Migration Project, which came from 674 individuals from 24 countries, including Pike and last semester's studio arts class, were on display in New Mexico until November. Plans are in place to continue the exhibitions, and Lorenz has begun collecting moths for 2018 and 2019.
