Second Williamstown pot shop OK'd
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A special permit for a second retail marijuana store on Main Street was approved unanimously by the Zoning Board of Appeals at Thursday's meeting.
The application from Elev8 Cannabis is for the property of the Four Acres restaurant at 217 Main St. (Route 2), which closed after a fire damaged the building more than 10 years ago. It has been vacant ever since.
Representing Elev8 was founder and CEO Seun Adedeji. Elev8 already has two shops, one in Eugene, Ore., and one in Athol.
Adedeji told the board that the special permit was the last step in the process of obtaining a provisional license from the state's Cannabis Control Commission, which would allow the firm to move ahead with demolition of the old restaurant and construction of a smaller structure and parking lot.
"Then we'll be able to knock it all down and build it back up," Adedeji said.
Board Chairman Andrew Hoar said the reuse of a long-term and highly visible vacant and dilapidated property has the support of town officials.
"Town Hall is more than ecstatic to see some investment in this abandoned property," he said.
The new structure would be slightly less than 2,500 square feet. Adedeji said there would be up to five employees. He said they hope to receive the provisional license in time to start demolition and construction in March.
"With the CCC, this is literally the last thing they need before granting a provisional license and we can get started on construction," he said.
As part of the permitting process, Elev8 will have to submit a comprehensive site plan review before being issued a building permit.
Once construction is completed, a final operating license would be contingent on facility inspections by CCC officials.
The Zoning Board of Appeals approved the special permit for a six-month period in a unanimous vote.
Adedeji said he hopes to be open next summer.
The location is across the street from the Colonial Plaza, where another marijuana store, Silver Therapeutics,
opened this year.
Elev8 executives have said they were drawn to Williamstown because it was one of the first towns in the state to create a zoning bylaw defining where a marijuana shop can locate. They also were attracted to town because of Williams College — they have close friends who attended the school and had nice things to say about the town.
