PROCTOR — An 18-year-old Pownal woman was killed early Thursday morning and three other occupants were injured when the car they were riding in crashed into an embankment, Vermont State Police said.

The woman, identified as Kianna E. Peters, was declared dead at the scene of the 3:18 a.m. crash, police said.

The driver, identified as Gage Capen, 21, of Pownal, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment. Two other passengers, Tatiana Goulette, 23, and Kassandra Boardman, 18, both of Rutland City, also suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to RRMC.

Of the four, only Capen was wearing a seat belt, police said. All three survivors suffered head injuries, they said.

Police said Capen was driving south on West Street when he swerved and lost control of the car, a 2000 Saab 9-3. The car hit an embankment on the east side of the road and flipped several times before coming to rest on its roof.

The Vermont State Police were assisted on scene by Rutland Town Police Department, Regional Ambulance Service, Proctor Fire Department, Rutland Town Fire Department and Rutland City Fire Department.
