Pownal town clerk out of office for 'indeterminate period'

GoFundMe page set up

POWNAL — Town Clerk Julie Weber will be away from her post for an unknown period of time, and others in the town office are pitching in to help with her duties, officials confirmed on Thursday.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in the clerk's name to defray costs associated with "unforeseen medical complications."

When reached Thursday, Select Board Chairman Bryan Harris said he'd been asked not to comment on Weber's situation.

"All I'm comfortable saying is that Julie is out unexpectedly for an indeterminate amount of time," he said.

The town is trying to coordinate coverage for her office. The assistant town clerk will be "trying to handle what she can" by appointment, and the town administrative assistant is attempting to cover as much as possible, he said.

Harris said he also has to make sure the topic is placed on the agenda for Monday's Select Board meeting.

"That's one of the things I want to discuss," he said.

Those needing town clerk services should still go to the town hall for those services, he said.

"[But] if it's something they can accomplish via the website, we would encourage them to use the website," he said.

Harris said Weber has been out of the office for about a week.

Weber, a lifelong resident of Pownal, began serving as the clerk after it became apparent that the prior clerk might not return to the office after a fall in late 2016. She had been assistant clerk.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was created for Weber on Jan. 6. The fundraiser page states that due to "unforeseen medical complications," Weber is in need of the community's support in her long journey to recovery.

"She is the friendly face that greets you as Pownal's town clerk," the GoFundMe page says of Weber. "When Julie isn't working at the town office, you can find her at the local American Legion. Julie has always been a fun spirited, good humored, caring individual. I have always known her to put others before herself. She is full of love and compassion for the ones she holds dear."

As of late afternoon Thursday, 17 donors had contributed $915 total, with a goal of $5,000.
