BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Police Department's sign in front of the station on Black Mountain Road was vandalized.

An officer returning to the station from patrol duties noticed the vandalism at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release. The crime is believed to have been committed between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. that day.

The letters "ACAB" had been painted in large print in blue paint. According to an online search, ACAB stands for "All Cops Are Bastards."

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Officer Ryan Washburn at 802-257-7950.

The department said as renovations to the Black Mountain Road building wrapping up in 2017, a local business expressed its desire to show support for the police department and its ongoing partnership with the community.

"This business donated time and labor to create and install the sign, a beautiful and enduring marker to our new location," states the news release. "The police department remains committed to our ongoing partnership with businesses and individuals as we continue to work to improve our services and make Brattleboro a safe and equitable place for everyone."

The department thanked the Brattleboro Department of Public Works for removing the vandalism. The department also posted a photo on Facebook of a boy who heard about the sign and spent his own money to bring police candy — "Starburst because we are superstars, he said, and airheads because they are his favorite."

"We are constantly reminded and humbled by how much support we enjoy from this community," the department said. "We will keep partnering with you to make Brattleboro a safe and equitable place for everyone. Thank you!"
