BENNINGTON — Police seized 3,750 bags of heroin and about $5,600 in cash after a search at a local hotel this week, but a suspect remains at large.

Bennington Police Department members executed a search warrant Wednesday at an unspecified hotel following an investigation into suspected drug activity, according to law enforcement. Officer Robert Murawski and police dog Gracie found a backpack and safe containing the heroin and cash.

The local department now is working with the Vermont Department of Corrections to apprehend Lucas R. Peabody, 22, of Bennington, who is suspected of possessing and trafficking heroin.

Peabody, whose whereabouts are unknown, is currently on probation for the sale of heroin, according to police.

Bennington police have recovered more than 5,000 bags of heroin over the past seven days and have several ongoing, drug-related investigations, according to the department, which is coordinating its efforts with state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Anyone with information on Peabody's whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Lawrence Cole at 802-442-1030.
