POWNAL — The Vermont State Police are looking for a Bennington man who allegedly crashed his all-terrain vehicle in Pownal, then tried to flee by jumping into a passerby's truck

Police were dispatched to Old Military Road and Barber Pond Road in Pownal for a reported ATV crash around 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

During the investigation, police learned the operator of the 2020 Honda Foreman ATV, Patrick Kearns, 31, of Bennington, had been ejected from the ATV during the crash and fled the scene after briefly recovering. According to police, Kearns jumped into the back of a passing pickup truck during his attempt to flee, but was forced out by the driver of the truck. He then fled into the nearby woods, police said.

Police said that Kearns is suspected of operating the ATV while intoxicated, based on witness statements and evidence at the scene.

Attempts to find Kearns were unsuccessful. Criminal charges for the incident are still pending.
