Police: License-less driver involved in Benmont Ave. crash

BENNINGTON — A man accused of operating a minivan without a driver's license on Benmont Avenue Friday morning caused a two-car crash, damaging both vehicles.

No injuries were sustained in the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m. just north of River Street.

Police initially received a report that the man, Brandon Ruggles, 27, had fled the scene, but it was later determined that he lives in the area and only had gone to alert a family member before returning, according to Lt. Cam Grande of the Bennington Police Department.

Grande said Ruggles was ticketed for limitations on backing and driving without a license.

"He just whammed right into the front end of the car," said Emma Stevens, 18, a college student who was driving northbound at the time her convertible was struck by the minivan.

Ruggles declined to comment when approached by a reporter shortly after the incident.

People at the scene of the crash, including the two drivers involved in the incident, briefly gathered in what appeared to be an impromptu prayer circle near the damaged convertible.
