Patriot boys edge Taconic Hills with relay win

Posted

BENNINGTON — The meet between the Mount Anthony and Taconic Hills boys swim teams came down to the final event, the 400-yard free relay.

A MAU victory in the event would give them a win over the Titans.

Getting fast swims from all four boys in the relay, MAU won 71-60.

The relay team of Andrew Marsden, Paul Becker, Cooper Niles and Devin Deets finished about a lap ahead of their Titans counterparts. At the end, Taconic Hills was disqualified in the event for having a swimmer leave the blocks too early.

The team won the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Individually, Anthony Mazzola won a pair of events, the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Devin Deets also won a pair of events in the 50 free and the 100 fly, while Nicholas Kristiansen took the 100 free.

Niles was second in two individual events, the 500 free and the 100 backstroke.

A new swimmer to the team, DJ Roy, finished fifth in two events, helping the boys edge out the Titans.

The girls team was a bit outnumbered, as they fell 98-68.

The Titans were able to put three relay teams together, gaining points based on numbers versus finishes.

MAU won the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay as a team. Individually, Grace Burhans won the 50 and 100 free, while Mary Mendez took the 100 back and Summer Nichols won the 100 breast. Nichols was second in the 200 free, Mendez was second in the 200 IM and Natasha Kopecj was second in the 100 fly.

MAU hosts Taconic on Wednesday at the Bennington Rec Center.
