POWNAL — Pownal Elementary School was closed Thursday and Friday due to having no water, officials confirmed Friday.

"It's a well pump issue, and it resulted in no water at the school," said Katie West, public information coordinator for the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union.

Officials aren't sure how long it will take to fix the problem, but they anticipate it will be resolved by Tuesday morning, when students return to school after having Monday off for Veterans Day, she said.

Maintenance staff discovered the issue Thursday morning, when they arrived at work and realized there wasn't any water, West said.

As soon as the problem came to light, people started working to resolve it, she said.

"Two days off of school is not something we would come to lightly," she said. "People are working on getting this problem fixed to get our kids back in school."

West confirmed that after-school activities were also cancelled Thursday and Friday.
