BENNINGTON - A man died Thursday in the Bank of Bennington parking lot on North Street from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Bennington Police responded to the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Bennington Rescue Squad was summoned, as well as a member of the Vermont State Police.

Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette said statements from two witnesses were taken. The man used a semi-automatic pistol. His name was not released.

Residents of the Walloomsac Apartments told the Banner they heard what sounded like a single gun shot, but did not witness the incident. No one else was reported injured.
