Man, 70, gets up to 15 years in prison for child sexual assault
BENNINGTON — A Bennington man has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child over a nine-year period, starting in the late `80s.
Robert Caron Sr., 70, was found guilty of sexual assault with no consent during a second jury trial in October.
Authorities said that between 1987 and 1996 in Pownal, Caron sexually assaulted a girl whom he knew. The attacks began when she was around 4 years old.
Judge John Valente, of the Bennington Superior Court, sentenced Caron to five to 15 years in prison on Feb. 7. Caron is also required to register on the sex offender registry.
The victim, now in her 30s, reported the assaults to the Bennington Police Department in 2018. The reason for the delay, she told jurors in October, was that she didn't want to go through the "very difficult" process of discussing the incidents.
The woman came forward after learning that Caron had been arrested on a separate complaint, according to court documents.
Caron was first tried Aug. 7 on his original charge of aggravated sexual assault on a victim younger than 13. The jurors couldn't agree on a verdict, and the Bennington County State's Attorney's Office decided to retry him.
Caron, who is being held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, is facing another charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child in a separate Bennington County case. He pleaded not guilty and will return to court for a status hearing on Feb. 28.
