Letter: Shaftsbury treasurer seeks re-election

To the Editor:

My name is Melanie Dexter, and I'm writing to ask the people of Shaftsbury to re-elect me to a second term as town treasurer.

In my first term, I introduced new internal control systems to help protect town resources, and helped to institute annual external professional audits to ensure accuracy and accountability. I managed the $1.1 million garage bond application process. Recently, I launched a new payment-by-credit-card system for the convenience of residents, at no cost to the town. Over the past three years, I've explained town finances at dozens of Selectboard meetings.

Most important, though, has been my work with individual residents: I have helped hundreds of people understand their tax bills. I've answered questions and solved problems, and sometimes just lent a sympathetic ear when that was what was needed most.

The citizens of Shaftsbury benefit when the town's elected officials and employees have a positive and professional working relationship, like the one I share with the town clerk, Marlene Hall. On March 6, I hope you will vote to re-elect both of us to another three-year term. Thanks for your support!

Melanie Dexter,
