To the Editor:

I note with interest the photograph in the May 31 Banner of the Olin Scott Cortege. In these days of continuing disappointments, it calls to mind a wonderful example of service to community and future generations. I refer to the Olin Scott Fund. Mr. Scott created the Fund to assist people with their college education. Three of my children received loans from the Fund to help with their college educations. Each year they applied and demonstrated their satisfactory performance at college and the loans would issue. Several months after graduations they paid the loans back at a moderate interest rate over 10 years.

The Fund has been overseen and administered by a voluntary board and they have grown the Fund substantially over the years through wise investment and the interest earned as the loans are repaid.

It is hard to imagine the contribution to our society this Fund has made for over a hundred years. How many college educations were made possible through the largesse and foresight of Olin Scott?

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Scott and the volunteers who have administered this gift to our community.

Joseph J. O'Dea,
