Letter: Lee-Clark thanks voters

To the Editor:

I wish to thank all of those who supported my candidacy for the Select Board as well as the following: the other three candidates who helped clarify the issues awaiting their leadership on the Select Board; Cassandra Barbeau, who as town clerk was gracious and careful in her handling of the vote and recount; the members of the Board of Civil Authority, who were attentive to each ballot as the recount progressed and who worked tirelessly at the polls last Tuesday; Beth Wallace and all her volunteers for the goodies that were brought to the polls last Tuesday; and finally, all those to took time to vote in last Tuesday's town meeting ballot. While the recount did not change the outcome (and I didn't expect that it would), I hope it assured us all of the basic integrity of our voting process.

My only real disappointment continues to be that so few of us voted. The Town Meeting vote is one of the more important votes that take place each year. Not only do we elect local leaders, but we act on town and school budgets which effect us all. We can and must do better than a little more than 2,000 active voters out of 9,000 registered voters out of a population of a little more than 16,000. Remember that your vote is your voice in this democracy! If you have ideas about how to increase participation in voting, please do not hesitate to share them.

Again, thanks for your kind words and votes, and let us continue to work toward a Bennington we can be even more proud of.

Bruce Lee-Clark,
