Letter: It's About Time!

School consolidation is not going away, so let's take this opportunity on Nov. 7 to help focus our educational improvement efforts here in our Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (SVSU) towns.

Consolidation is going to happen, whether you vote yes, or no, or don't vote at all. Voting gives you the opportunity to express your opinion on the design of the future consolidated governance plan. A united board could provide a consistent and efficient flow of information and support for educational improvements. "Local control" will not disappear, but will be built into a better system to use time and energy more efficiently. Servicing seven boards in the SVSU and almost 50 board members requires too much wasted time. Consolidation provides an organized process for focusing educational leadership time on the most important student learning issues.

Change is coming and it is a positive step to support educational leadership in all of our schools. Voting will allow you to have a voice in how the change is made. Make it your plan - or we will be left with whatever the state decides. Now is the time to carefully consider a locally created governance consolidation, designed by our dedicated local Act 46 committee. Please vote on November 7.

Donna J. Leep, PhD

Assistant Superintendent

Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union
