Letter: Change to a mayor system not in town's best interests

To the Editor:

To quote Martin Luther King, Jr., "Our lives begin to end, the day we become silent about things that matter." Bennington matters to me.

I believe a mayoral system would not be in the best interests of our town. Our governance could become political and divisive. The proposal being put before the voters smacks of political power. The Manager/Select Board system we have now is approachable, and our voices are heard.

Having served on the Select Board for nineteen years, I have experienced the genuineness of the elected officials and the staff that works for all of us living in Bennington. Tim Corcoran, Bennington's town clerk during my tenure as Select Board chair, felt as strongly as I do that there is no need for this kind of change. I wish his voice could be heard today.

Please vote against the binding referendum for the mayoral system. Thank you.
