Letter: Challenger unworthy to criticize Marthage

To the Editor:

I am writing to respond to Atty. Gottlieb's criticisms of State's Attorney Erica Marthage, published in the Bennington Banner on May 1. As a newcomer to the area, Mr. Gottlieb's remarks are out of line — and don't square with my personal experience.

A year ago, I was the victim of a crime. Atty. Marthage and her staff were the best. although I sought justice and safety, I did not want to see the young perpetrator put in jail nor charged with a crime. To that end, Atty. Marthage and her staff worked patiently and diligently — all while helping me through an emotional and tough time. I was connected with the victims advocate, who was wonderful and very helpful. The Center for Restorative Justice was also involved. The matter was resolved without incarceration and without a crime charged.

Atty. Gottlieb's short time in our community is not enough to appreciate Atty. Marthage's years of experience as State's Attorney and her commitment to our community. I ask that Atty. Gottlieb hold his criticisms until he, too, demonstrates the longevity, experience and commitment to our community that Atty. Marthage has. She is engaged and cares for all affected in our criminal justice system. With her as our State's Attorney, we are in good hands, and I am proud to support her.

Sandra Bechtel,
