Letter: Bennington needs a purchasing policy
To the Editor:
I am writing in support of Bill Scully's idea to establish purchasing policies for all town expenditures. I am a member of several boards both in town and out of state. Each of these boards have policies requiring several layers of approval before purchasing or contracts are finalized. Quite frankly, I am astonished that our town board does not have a policy governing purchases and contracts. The town board has a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers to set limits and establish guidelines for spending. They must also do their own research and not depend on on one person to do it all and then rubber-stamp his opinion. Most boards meet with experts in committee before any decisions are brought to the public meeting. All committee meetings are public and everyone has a chance to give their opinions as well.
