Letter: Band-Aids and bailing twine
Our town charter has been patched up several times over the years and was long overdue for a thorough spring cleaning. Band-Aids and baling twine can only take you so far. The hard-working Charter Review Committee spent many months grinding away to bring us their best thinking. Over the winter, the Select Board publicly reviewed hundreds of revisions that remove outdated or inaccurate language, add accountability, create new possibilities for the voters to consider in the future, and make small changes to how the Downtown Improvement District is managed. The recommended changes shift several important decision making functions to the town, away from the Vermont Legislature. Increased local control and greater accountability are the two best reasons to vote for this amendment; no longer having an embarrassingly outdated town charter is another!
