RUTLAND — Rutland Country Club's Drake Hull saw his lead at the Vermont Amateur Championships cut down a bit, but the three-time defending champion still leads by two strokes.

Mount Anthony Country Club's Cory Jozefiak sits in sixth place with a 3-over for the tournament, after shooting 1-over Wednesday.

MACC's Stephen Carknard is in eighth with a score of 5-over.

Ewkanok's Paul Heffernan is in 14th place, sitting at 8-over for the tournament.

MACC's Aaron Wood dropped a bit on the leaderboard after a 9-over round Wednesday, but he still made the cut, in 27th place at 11-over

MACC's Taylor Bellemare sits at 14-over.

Local golfers that didn't make the cut included: Josh Cohen, Eddie Lewicki, Harrison Digangi, Keith Komline, Ryan O'Neill, Jack Bushee, Matt Smith, William Tate, Brett Grigsby and Logan Ripley.

Barring any weather issues, the final two rounds will be played today in Rutland.

SMS open training sessions

STRATTON—The Stratton Mountain School Nordic Program and the Elite SMS T2 Team will be hosting weekly training sessions each Thursday through August 8, and all ages are welcome. The training sessions will feature roller-skiing, hiking, ski walking, and a cookout, and additional workouts may be added throughout the summer.

SMS Nordic's Summer Training Program aims to get young athletes excited about Nordic Skiing in sessions led by members of the Elite SMS T2 Team — whose members, including Olympians Sophie Caldwell, Simi Hamilton, and Jessie Diggins, train in Stratton.

The program will be overseen by three-time U.S. Ski and Snowboard Coach of the Year, and former SMS Nordic Director, Sverre Caldwell.

MAU coach hosts lacrosse camp

BENNINGTON — Mount Anthony girls lacrosse coach Emily Cross is hosting a Southern Vermont girls lacrosse camp, set to go from July 15-18.

The camp is offered to girls in grades 3 through 9 and will be coached by Cross and other MAU girls lacrosse alumni.

It will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day that week at Chesnut Field at Mount Anthony Union Middle School.

Registration for the camp costs $100.

Campers can expect individual skill building, team skills, new terminology, one-on-one evaluations and games/drills.

Campers should bring cleats, a lacrosse stick, a mouth guard, sun screen and water.

Castleton coach hosts camp

MANCHESTER — Castleton University's soccer coach John O'Connor and his assistants are hosting a Soccer Skills Clinic geared towards boys and girls entering grades 2-8, whose goal is to play middle school and junior varsity soccer in the fall.

There will be two sessions, one that started Monday and runs through Friday and another from July 29 to August 2 at Dana Thompson Rec Park's Eckhardt Field.

Grades 2-5 will go from 8:30-11:30 a.m., while grades 6-8 will go 1-4 p.m and the camp will run rain or shine.

The cost to participate is $150 and includes three hours of college-level coaching and a reversible practice jersey.

Scrimmages, drills and goalkeeping will be the mainstay of the clinic.

For those attending the morning session, an extended day is available. Campers will be brought over to the Rec Park Staff at 11:30 a.m.

Lunch is not provided so campers must bring their own lunch, snacks, as well as a bathing suit and towel.

There is an extra fee of $50 for residents and $70 for non-residents.

MAU job openings

BENNINGTON — A handful of coaching positions are open for Mount Anthony Union High School.

MAU is looking to fill the varsity baseball, varsity girls tennis, junior varsity boys basketball, middle school boys basketball and middle school boys soccer coaching positions for the 2019-20 school year.

Applicants should have previous coaching experience and a background in the sport.

HFCC Junior golf program

HOOSICK, N.Y. — The Hoosick Falls Country Club announced the offering of a 4-week Junior Golf Program taught by Coach Mike Baratto.

The program began Monday and runs through August 8.

Participants will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Players ages 10-17 are eligible to participate.

Instruction will consist of a range of topics that will include the fundamentals of grip, alignment and posture, and course management. Following the one hour of instruction, those who are ready will participate in some on-course play.

Each player should have his or her own equipment. Cost is free to members of HFCC and $40 per participant for non-members.
