Jazz comes to Oldcastle on Sept. 12


BENNINGTON — Bassist Michael Bisio and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm will perform an evening of cool jazz at the Bennington Performing Arts Center/Oldcastle Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.

An instructor at Bennington College and a master artist in residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, as well as a composer, Bisio has has more than 100 recordings in his discography, more than two dozen as leader, with dozens more documenting his extraordinary association with piano icon Matthew Shipp. The New York Times said, "The physicality of Mr. Bisio's bass playing puts him in touch with numerous predecessors in the avante garde, but his expressive touch is distinctive."

Jazz Times describes Bisio as "a performer who resonates with intelligence, emotional depth and probing virtuosity." He has been recognized with nine project grants from various arts organizations. He has performed throughout the Americas and Europe and in such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival, Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, MOMA and the Festival Sons D'hiver in Paris.

Fred Lonberg-Holms is a composer, cellist and improvisor. His recordings include free jazz, new music, pop, rock, and pop, rick, and noise. he has performed on several continents at festivals in Oslo, Copenhagen Al L'Arme in Berlin, the Chicago and Newport Jazz Festivals. He leads a number of ensembles including Stirrup and the Lightbox Orchestra, a non-gestural conduction system developed in the mid-'90s for large and ad hoc groups of approximately 10 musicians.

"We want to present more jazz at the theatre and always enjoy being able to present Bennington College faculty members to the community," said Eric Peterson, Oldcastle's producing artistic director. "Michael and Fred are consummate musicians that have been heard in some of the finest concert halls in the world as well as intimate nightspots in New York and Chicago. It is exciting to be able to bring their talents to downtown Bennington."
