Events, closures to mark Veterans Day
A range of events and closings in the Bennington area will mark Veterans Day, a federal holiday observed on Nov. 11.
The town's Veterans Day Parade, organized by the American Legion, Post 13, will start at 11:00 a.m. at the former middle school on Main Street and continue to the Vermont Veterans' Home. Students in grades two through six at the Village School of North Bennington will participate with their classes in the parade in support of those who have served, according to the school's website. Students from other schools are also expected to attend, said Steve Greenslet, commander of the legion.
Also at 11:00 a.m., the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site in Hoosick, New York, will host an event featuring a musket salute and a flag-retreat ceremony assisted by Boy Scout Troop 65. Light refreshments will be available.
At 11:11 a.m. in Arlington, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 69 will dedicate a new flagpole and flag in honor of veterans at the Evergreen Cemetery. An open house, potluck and membership drive at Post 69, located at 54 Legion Rd., will follow.
Customers at Stewart's Shops will be able to purchase single-scoop cones for just 50 cents "in honor of our veterans and those who continue to serve our country," according to a news release, which said the chain has made product and monetary donations to more than 150 veterans groups this year.
And at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day, a string quartet from Taconic Music, a group based in Manchester, will perform a concert at the Vermont Veterans' Home on North Street as part of the ongoing DuFour Concert Series, which is sponsored by local businesses and anonymous donors.
There will be no school Monday for students within the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, which includes Bennington Elementary School and Mount Anthony Union Middle School and High School.
The U.S. Postal Service, which employs more than 1,600 veterans in northern New England, will not provide regular mail delivery or retail services, though carriers will deliver Priority Express and other next-day services, the agency said.
The Bennington Free Library on Silver Street will be closed.
Bennington's Town Offices will be open for collection of property taxes that are due Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The Town of Hoosick's Town Offices will be closed.
