Editorial: Your chance to get informed on Act 46

What are you doing tonight?

Here's an idea: Make an investment in becoming a smarter voter on the most important decision Bennington and its surrounding towns have faced in years.

The Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union Act 46 merger committee for Bennington, Shaftsbury, Pownal and Woodford is holding an informational hearing at 7 p.m. at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, in the school auditorium.

The merger committee will be there to present the facts of the proposed merger and answer questions from the public.

Here's what's at stake: A unified school district including the same towns as MAU, with one board, one budget and one tax rate.

Schools are central to our communities and their identities. They educate our children, but they're also where we can find the roots of our shared past and our future, too. Their continued health is essential to the well-being of our community. So how they are governed and operated matters a great deal.

With that in mind, and to make an informed choice on an issue this big, you need to know the facts.

You can start with the SVSU website and read the proposal.

Read the proposal and our coverage of the issues. Then come to this meeting, ask questions and find out for yourself whether you think it makes sense. Naturally, we want as many people as possible to vote. But democracy works best when voters are informed on the facts.

If you have the time and the means, we suggest you come hear the facts for yourself.
