BENNINGTON — A tractor-trailer driver was seriously injured when his truck hauling an overweight open trailer loaded with stone rolled over on the side of the U.S. 7 exit 2 offramp Wednesday morning, police say.

The truck was determined to be 18,000 pounds overweight, said the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicle Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, which assisted with the crash.

A passing motorist helped the driver out of the truck, which flipped onto its passenger side, according to a Bennington Police Department press release. The operator, a 57-year-old man from North Hoosick, N.Y., was transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for "serious, but non life-threatening injuries" by Bennington Rescue, the release states.

The offramp was closed for several hours and re-opened at 1:45 p.m., police said.

The truck is owned by Hulett Trucking, LLC of West Pawlet and was on its way to Peckham Industries, located on U.S. Route 7A in Shaftsbury.

Bennington Rescue, Bennington Fire Department, Bennington Rural Fire Department, the Vermont State Police, the Bennington County Sheriff's Department, and the Bennington Police Department assisted at the scene.

No charges have yet been filed. The crash is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Bennington Police Department at 802-442-1030.
