NORTH BENNINGTON — A car traveling southbound on Route 7A careened off the road and struck a detached farmhouse at The Harwood Hill motel property Thursday morning.

The driver, Cory O'Connor, 33, experienced what Bennington Police Department Sgt. Jason Burnham described in a news release as a "medical event" that caused him to lose control of the vehicle, a 2018 Ford Focus. The vehicle traveled over the motel's front lawn and into the building, located at 864 Harwood Hill Road.

Police, along with the Bennington Rural Fire Department and Bennington Rescue Squad, responded to the scene, according to the release. O'Connor was transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center by Bennington Rescue.

The incident occurred a little before 9 a.m., according to motel employee Jamie Murphy, who described the damage to the building as minimal and said the business' thoughts are with the driver.

About an hour after the incident, faint tire marks were visible on the motel's lawn. Clay planters near the farmhouse appeared to have been struck by the car.

The farmhouse's second floor features a two-bedroom suite for motel guests.

Attempts to reach O'Connor on Thursday afternoon were not successful.
