Deer or DUI? Police suspect alcohol involved in crash

SHAFTSBURY — A man who told police he crashed his truck after swerving to avoid a deer is being cited with driving under the influence of alcohol.

State Police said that on Sunday, shortly after midnight, they responded to Harwood Hill Road (Route 7A) near Town Line Road for a crash. There they found a 2015 GMC Sierra with heavy front-end damage. Police said the driver's side wheel had been nearly torn off. The driver, Alex E. Cross, 23, of Shaftsbury, told police he'd been driving north on Route 7A when he swerved to miss a deer. He lost control of the vehicle and went off the road.

Police suspected Cross was impaired and had him do field sobriety exercises. He was taken into custody and cited for DUI. He's scheduled to appear in Bennington County Superior Court Bennington criminal division on Sept. 11.

Cross, a 2012 graduate of Mount Anthony, coached the junior varsity Patriots boys lacrosse team for the first time this spring.
