Bennington Marauders compete at Silver Championships

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — The Bennington Marauders competed this past weekend at the Silver Championship meet in Clifton Park, NY.

Twenty three swimmers traveled for the meet and 14 of them placed in the top eight. This was the final winter meet for many of the swimmers.

Placing in the top 8 was: Anthony Mazzola (6th-100 Breast and 6th-50 Free), Perrin Marion (7th-50 Free), Paige Marion (7th-200 Fly), Gabe Nesbit (7th-100 Fly), Sarah Asciutto (6th-50 Free), Josha Roopnarine (8th-100 Fly), Molly Harper (6th-100 IM and 4th-100 Free), Raven French (6th-50 Free and 6th-50 Fly), Alexina Dolmetsch (8th-50 Back, 1st-100 Free and 1st-25 Fly), Zach LaForest (8th-100 Back, 8th-100 Breast, 5th-100 Fly and 2nd-100 Free), Grace Burhans (7th-50 Free, 6th-100 Back and 3rd-100 Free), Amelia Zazzaro (7th-100 Free), Devin Deets (2nd-200 Fly) and Emily Tibbetts (1st-50 Breast, 1st-100 IM).

Also swimming and posting best times for the Marauders was: Shay Callanan, Trinity Madison, Adeline Manning, James Murphy, Jesse Nesbit, Sadie Obenauer, Logan Parizo, Sebastian White, and Zoey Zazzaro.

The following swimmers have achieved times that qualify for the upcoming Gold Championship meet in two weeks: Sarah Asciutto, Emily Tibbetts, Zach LaForest, Elyse Altland, Kendal Madison, Molly Harper and Paige Marion.

MAU ski fundraiser

WOODFORD — The Mount Anthony Nordic ski team participated in the "Ski for BFC" fundraiser this past weekend at Prospect Mountain.

MAU raised more than $3,000 for the Bennington Free Clinic and presented that at the fundraiser Sunday.

The Bennington Free Clinic provides free primary medical care, including management of acute and chronic diseases; physical exams; wellness education; women's clinics; case care management; referrals to participating specialists when medically necessary; and assistance obtaining pharmaceuticals.

SVC volleyball swept

FRANKLIN, Mass. - Southern Vermont College fell 3-0 to Dean Monday night in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match at Pieri Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs grabbed the first two sets by 25-14 and 25-16 margins to take a comfortable lead in the contest; Dean then clipped SVC 25-19 in the third to sweep the first meeting of the season between the two sides.

Southern Vermont sophomore Te Hayward led the visitors with 10 kills on the night, while tying the team-high of eight digs. Junior Isaiah Backels registered another eight kills in addition to 13 assists, two kills, and two service aces and senior captain El Olivares tallied seven digs and six kills.

The Mountaineers (0-11, 0-6 NECC) are back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches at Johnson & Wales University; SVC willfirst take on Emmanuel College at 1 p.m. before going up against the hosting Wildcats at 3 p.m.

Bennington Horseshoe Club

The Bennington Horseshoe Club will host four tournaments for the upcoming season.

They will host the Spring Warm Up on May 6, Leon O'Dell Classic on May 27, Cooper Family Classic on July 22 and the Vermont State Doubles on August 26.

The league will be held in the summer months starting on April 23 and each Monday for 16 weeks.

Sign ups for the league will be held on April 14 and 15 at noon on the courts at Willow Park.

MALA registration

MALA is a youth lacrosse program from kindergarten to 8th grade for boys and girls representing Bennington, North Bennington, Woodford, Pownal and Shaftsbury.

Their boys and girls U9 instructional team season starts on April 9 and practices two days a week. Their boys and girls U11, U13 and U15 travel teams practice three to four days a week and their season starts on April 2.

Registration for soccer club begins

HOOSICK, N.Y. — The Hoosick Falls Soccer Club is registering players for the spring season.

The Early Bird Special is happening now, the cost is $45 and registration closes on March 15.

Kids ranging from three years old to sixth grade can sign up.

First Memorial Soccer Classic in Manchester

MANCHESTER — The town of Manchester will host the Memorial Soccer Classic on Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27 at Dana Thompson Park.

The tournament is open to girls and boys from U10, U12, U14 and U17 teams.

Note that this is not a Premiere Tournament (there are so many choices in the NE for Div1/Premiere). The Manchester Classic is envisioned as a Div2 /3 Family "destination" tournament.

The cost to register a team is $425 for U-10 and $550 for U12, U14 and U17 teams.

There are four games guaranteed for all teams over the weekend.
