Bennington man held without bail on sex assault charges
BENNINGTON— A 34 year-old Bennington man pleaded not guilty Friday to two felony charges relating to the sexual assault of a woman he recently met, according a Vermont Superior Court docket.
Robert J. Billington, who lives at the Starlight Inn on Route 7, was arrested Dec. 6 after a woman gave Vermont State Police a sworn written statement that Billington had forced himself on her sexually despite her not giving consent, police say.
The victim said she met Billington recently and told him she was not interested in having a sexual relationship right away, but he was "very persistent" in pressuring her, police say. She told police she consented to sex with Billington twice, but the third time Billington asked she told him no. This time, Billington allegedly forced the victim in a sexual act with him despite her "constantly" telling him no, states the affidavit.
On Friday, Acting Judge Samuel Hoar ordered Billington held without bail at Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland pending a weight of evidence hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Hoar also issued Billington with conditions which include forbidding him to contact the victim.
