Auditions scheduled for 'The Dining Room'

BENNINGTON — Bennington Community Theater will hold auditions for A.R. Gurney's "The Dining Room," which will be directed by Christine Decker, Oldcastle Theatre's director of education, on Feb. 9 and 10 from noon to 4 p..m. at Oldcastle Theatre, 331 Main St.

Performances will be May 3 and 4 at 7:30 pm and May 5 at 2 p.m. No prepared audition piece or appointment is required; selected sides from the script will be provided for the audition. The actors will be expected to play multiple characters. Rehearsals will generally be in the evenings on weekdays and in the afternoon on weekends. The first rehearsal will be on or about Feb. 27.

"Nobody comes near a dining room any more . Nowadays, people eat in kitchens, or in the living room, standing around, balancing their plates like jugglers. Soon they'll be eating in bathrooms. Well why not?" Thus broods one of the characters in the highly acclaimed Off-Broadway hit "The Dining Room," a richly woven, imaginative, affectionate and often hilarious look at a vanishing breed: the American upper middle class. Set in a dining room, which becomes an emblem for an entire culture, Gurney's play is a delightful series of vignettes involving an assortment of families and characters of all ages and generations.

Bennington Community Theater is also looking for stage managers, and set, costume, light and sound designers, as well as those willing to help with the construction and execution of all the above. Anyone interested can come to the auditions and/or call 802-447-0564.

This will be the Bennington Community Theater's second production, following December's production of "The Curious Savage."
