Arlington seeks volunteers for town administrator search committee
ARLINGTON — The town is seeking local volunteers to join the search committee for Arlington's first ever administrator.
The Select Board will appoint three to five Arlington community members who will help it choose the town administrator by Nov. 1, according to a letter board members signed last week.
The work of the "advisory search committee" would involve coming up with the town administrator job description, searching for qualified candidates, reviewing applications, interviewing applicants and choosing three finalists.
The group will include Select Board members who wish to participate, states the letter, whose contents are posted on the Arlington town website.
Committee members should be available to serve from July to November. Among their deadlines are: the administrator job post should be publicized by Sept. 1 and the three finalists chosen by Oct. 1.
The successful candidate will be named Nov. 1 at the latest - in time to start the part-time job in January. The five-person Arlington Select Board will make the hiring decision.
The Select Board letter didn't specify requirements for search committee volunteers, though board member Cynthia Browning said in an interview that the board is looking for people with "relevant experience" and who can bring "different viewpoints."
Which members of the Select Board, and how many, would be on the committee are still unknown, Browing said. "We will have more information as the process unfolds," she added.
Arlington residents voted to create the town administrator position during Town Meeting Day in March. The Arlington Area Renewal Project proposed the idea to the Select Board as a way to help the town grow and improve.
The administrator would handle most of the municipality's day-to-day operational affairs, which would allow the Select Board to focus on long-term strategic planning.
People interested in volunteering for the advisory search committee can contact the Arlington Select Board office, Browning said.
The office, located in the town hall at 3828 Route 7A, is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. It can also be reached at (802) 375-6474.
