The throwback Pat Patriots uniforms weren't the only thing reminding New England fans of a bygone era. On the field, the team was playing like it did in the era before Tom Brady arrived and led it to six Super Bowls. Josh Allen threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bills to a 24-10 victory over the Patriots. It was Buffalo's third straight victory over New England. It’s the first time the Bills have beaten the Patriots three times in a row since 2000. That was before Brady took his first NFL snap.

Jayson Tatum had eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 49 points, and the Boston Celtics held off the hot-shooting Miami Heat for a 134-121 victory. It was the All-Star’s third 40-point game this season as he continues to pace the league’s top-rated offense and make an early case for MVP consideration in his sixth NBA season. Boston has won five straight and 14 of its last 15. Jaylen Brown finished with 26 points following a one-game absence due to neck stiffness. Malcolm Brogdon added 21 points, connecting on five of Boston’s 22 3-pointers in the game. Max Strus finished with five 3-pointers and 23 points for Miami. Jaylen Brown scored a season-high 36 points and the Boston Celtics held off the Washington Wizards 130-121. Malcolm Brogdon added 17 points and Derrick White finished with 15 for the Celtics, who have won three straight and 12 of their last 13. It is also Boston’s second win this season over Washington, which has lost its last three. Celtics star Jayson Tatum missed his first game this season with a sprained left ankle.  But his absence didn’t slow down the offense, as Boston jumped out to 17-point halftime edge and grew its lead as high as 26 in the third quarter. Bradley Beal led Washington with 30 points.

The Boston Bruins set the NHL record for most home victories to start a season with their 12th straight, topping the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime with a power-play goal from David Pastrnak. The Bruins broke the mark of 11 that was set by the 1963-64 Chicago Blackhawks and equaled by the Florida Panthers last season. Boston trailed 2-0 late in the second period and tied it with 9:33 left in regulation when David Krejci scored his second of the game on a shot from the right point. Pyotr Kochetkov and Stefan Noesen each scored a power-play goal for Carolina.

Hunter Henry and the New England Patriots had a touchdown reception overturned by replay review in the third quarter at Minnesota. The Patriots settled for a tiebreaking field goal and didn't score again in a 33-26 loss to the Vikings. Officials determined the ball touched the ground as Henry briefly lost control. Henry disagreed. Nick Folk had four field goals in another sign of trouble in the red zone for the Patriots. They failed to score a touchdown on three trips inside Minnesota’s 20 after entering the game with the NFL's second-worst red zone rate.

Patrick Williams scored a season-high 17, and the Bulls made it look rather easy against the team with the NBA’s best record. Marcus Jones’ 84-yard punt return gallop punctuated the Patriots' win over the Jets on Sunday. But on a day in which the defense dominated and showed its steady improvement throughout the season, it also highlighted how the offense is still far behind as New England prepares to make its playoff push. For the season New England’s red zone efficiency rate is now just 42.9%, ranking 31st in the NFL entering Monday. As good as the defense is playing this season, it will need the offense to do a better job of finishing drives down the stretch with matchups against some of the league’s highest-scoring teams in the Bills, Bengals and Dolphins still on deck.
