BENNINGTON (AP) - A 22-year-old Pownal woman has been sentenced to 30 months to 20 years in prison stemming from a car crash that caused a pregnant woman to lose the twins she was carrying.
Kelly M. Cook had pleaded guilty to two felony charges of gross negligence while driving on Route 7 in Bennington in August of 2009 when her vehicle crossed the center line and hit an oncoming car driven by Patricia Blair of Bennington.
Blair, who was pregnant at the time with twins, survived the crash but after being hospitalized with a broken back lost both 6-month-old fetuses. Her husband incurred numerous broken bones leaving him debilitated.
Blair asked the court to show her children and the community that the justice system works by imposing a sentence of 20 years.
