RUTLAND — A Pownal man has been cited with multiple felony charges after he wrecked the car he was driving last summer, killing one of his passengers.

Gage Capen, 21, was cited by state police with three counts of grossly negligent operation in a July 9 crash in the town of Proctor. He is scheduled to appear in Rutland Superior criminal court on Feb. 22, according to a news release.

Investigators say Capen was driving south on Proctor’s West Street when he swerved and lost control of the car, a 2000 Saab 9-3. The car reportedly struck an embankment on the east side of the road, flipped and landed on its roof.

Police said one of Gage’s three female passengers was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as Kianna E. Peters, 18, a Pownal resident.

They said Gage suffered life-threatening head injuries. His two other passengers, who were ejected from the car, sustained head injuries that were not life-threatening. Only Gage was reported to have been wearing a seat belt.
