BENNINGTON -- A former Bromley Brook School employee accused of having sexual relations with a student there pleaded guilty Wednesday to amended charges.

Guilty to misdemeanors

Stephen F. Peters, 40, of Woodford, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of sexual assault of a minor. The charges were amended down from felony sexual exploitation of a minor charges. Peters admitted having sex with a 16-year-old girl.

A charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a 12-year-old child was dismissed.

During the deposition phase, the state found there was not enough evidence to support the charge that Peters used his position as a coach to coerce sexual conduct from the student, said Deputy State’s Attorney Christina Rainville.

A pre-sentencing investigation will be conducted prior to a sentencing hearing, she said.

According to police, a 17-year-old student at the school told authorities that she knew of a sexual relationship between Peters and the 16-year-old girl, and that Peters and the 16-year-old girl would arrange sexual encounters in vacant classrooms.

Police said the 16-year-old told them she and Peters’ relationship began in mid-September, the last sexual encounter occurring Oct. 11.

Bromley Brook School is a private all-girl boarding school in Manchester.
