BENNINGTON — Bennington Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week after two cases of COVID-19 were reported among the school community, making it the second Bennington school to be closed this week.
The Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union was notified Monday of the positive results, Superintendent James Culkeen said. Administrators met with the SVSU Rapid Response Team, the Bennington Elementary School principal, and representatives of the Vermont Department of Health, and the decision was made to close the building for the rest of the week, he said.
All students will be engaging in remote learning, he said.
“In keeping with Vermont Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, our team took immediate steps to isolate the situation,” Culkeen said in an announcement on SVSU websites. “We are working closely with local and state officials to ensure our community remains safe and healthy,” he said.
All close contacts have been determined and notified, Culkeen said. The schools’ maintenance staff will sanitize all surfaces within the affected spaces.
“Please be assured that we continue to plan for a safe and healthy school environment by implementing best practices in alignment with guidance from the Vermont Department of Health and the Vermont Agency of Education,” Culkeen said.
On Friday, SVSU announced a case of COVID-19 at Mount Anthony Union High School. When a second case was reported on Saturday, SVSU announced that MAUHS and Southwest Tech, the former CDC, would switch to remote instruction for this week.
The SVSU reminded students and their families that the best ways to stop the spread of COVID-19 are to wear a face mask, wash hands, keep children at home if they are exhibiting any symptoms common to COVID-19, and to call the doctor if anyone in the family has symptoms of COVID-19.
