BENNINGTON — Two local teens died in a vehicular crash in Petersburgh, N.Y., on Thursday afternoon, the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office said.

David Peterson, 19, of Bennington, was driving and his passenger was Jonathan L. M. Peters, 18, also known as Jonathan Mason, of North Pownal.

Peterson was heading west on New York Route 346 when his vehicle left the roadway from the northbound shoulder and hit a tree, the sheriff's office said in a release.

Rensselaer County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene at 4:19 p.m. Peterson and Peters were pronounced dead upon arrival, the release stated.

As of Friday afternoon, the cause of the accident was still under investigation by the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office. It's unclear if an autopsy is being conducted, said sheriff's deputy and spokesman Kyle Bourgault.

Vermont State Police dispatch initially received the 911 call about the crash, because the cellphone used pinged on a Vermont cell tower. The call was then routed to dispatch in New York state, said Lt. Thomas Mozzer, commander at the VSP Shaftsbury barracks.

VSP troopers later helped with the death notification, Mozzer said.

Several other agencies responded to the incident, according to the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office. They were the Petersburgh fire department, Petersburgh ambulance, Hoosick Fire Department, Pownal Valley Fire Department, Pownal Rescue Squad, Bennington Rescue Squad, Rensselaer County Fire and EMS coordinators, Rensselaer County medical examiner's office and New York State Department of Transportation.
