BENNINGTON >> Following the death of long-time town clerk Tim Corcoran last week, the Select Board has appointed his assistant of some 20 years to fill the position.

The board voted unanimously to appoint Cassandra "Cassie" Barbeau as town clerk. Absent were board members John McFadden and board Chairman Greg Van Houten.

"I'd like to offer condolences from the board to the entire Corcoran family," said the board's vice chair, Sharyn Brush, before she called for a moment of silence.

Corcoran passed away on Thursday from complications due to cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2012 and underwent treatment for. Also a former State House Representative, Corcoran had a great impact on Bennington and was known for his sense of humor and personal connections with hundreds of people in town.

The motion to appoint Barbeau was made by board member Justin Corcoran, a nephew of the late town clerk.

"I know it was Tim's wish that this is what we do," said Brush.

"I think we're very fortunate to have such a strong staff over the years," said board member Thomas Jacobs. "Cassie is probably one of the shining stars of that effort. She's special to our community, and I look forward to working with you."

"I agree with Tom, and the appointment is well-deserved," said board member Michael Keane.

"He had an absolutely tremendous respect for your abilities," said board member Jim Carroll to Barbeau, who was present at the meeting but did not make a statement.

Carroll said Corcoran had expressed to him not wanting a special memorial service. "But I think it's fair to say that no matter where you go in town all you need to do is look in the faces of the people of Bennington to see Tim's memorial, from the hundreds of thousands of acts of kindness he did for them," he said.

Town Manager Stuart Hurd said that Gov. Peter Shumlin, a personal friend of Corcoran's, has authorized the lowering to half staff all flags in Bennington County and certain other places in the state from Nov. 15 to the following Monday in Corcoran's honor.

Tim Corcoran II, Corcoran's son, said Barbeau will officially be sworn in at the Town Office on Tuesday.
