Woman killed, 3 injured in head-on crash on Route 7 in Williamstown

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- A woman was killed Thursday morning after the car she was traveling in was involved in a head-on collision on Route 7 during a morning snowfall, authorities said.

The woman was a passenger in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra that collided with a 2009 Buick Lucerne, according to Williamstown police. She was transported to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, where she later died.

Three other people were taken to Berkshire Medical Center with injuries that were serious but did not appear life-threatening, according to Williamstown Police Sgt. Scott McGowan. The victims' names -- a driver and a passenger in each car -- are not being released at this time.

The cause of the accident, which occurred on the New Ashford Road portion of Route 7, is still under investigation by Massachusetts State and Williamstown Police.

"Certainly road conditions, at this time, appear to a contributing factor," McGowan said.

The road was closed for more than six hours as North Adams Police, North Adams Ambulance, Lanesborough Police, and Massachusetts Police were called in for help at the scene.

Two occupants had to be extricated from one of the vehicles using Jaws of Life, according to a release from the Williamstown Police Department. The Williamstown Fire District and Village Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
