POWNAL -- Vermont State Police reported an accident on U.S. Route 7 in the early morning hours Saturday. There were no injuries but the operator of the vehicle was processed and charged with driving under the influence.

Police were dispatched to a report of a single-car motor vehicle crash on Saturday, June 18, at approximately 3:14 a.m. The crash occurred on U.S. Route 7 in Pownal, near the Armstrong farm pumpkin patch.

Police said that the operator of the vehicle, Ashley Chiorgno, 27, of Bennington, had called 911 to report that she had crashed into a telephone pole. The vehicle, a 2010 gray Subaru Impreza, was reported to have received extensive front end damage and was totaled. Chiorgno was uninjured in the accident. Road conditions were reported to be dry at the time of the incident.

During the course of their investigation, police determined that Chiorgno may have been under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation revealed that she was in fact under the influence, according to police.

Chiorgno was taken into custody and processed for DUI at the Bennington Police Department, and was released and subsequently cited to appear in Bennington District Court at a later date. The Bennington Police responded to the scene to assist with the crash investigation and subsequent DUI processing.
