Vt. teacher fired over email use reinstated
DANVILLE (AP) -- A Vermont high school social studies teacher fired in 2012 for violating the school’s email policy has won his job back.
An arbitrator decided in favor of David Warren of Danville High School on Jan. 26, finding school officials’ claims insufficient.
Warren used email to correspond with members of a band he played in. He was warned not to use school email for personal gain.
In 2012, Warren’s school email was used during the purchase of a gun from an online broker. Warren said his account with the broker had been established long before; he didn’t realize the account was still using his school email address.
Other school personnel testified they used their school email for personal purchases and weren’t aware that violated school policy.
Warren’s email use was first reviewed following an April 2012 altercation with a student, for which was suspended for five days.
Warren said Sunday he is looking forward to returning to his teaching position and said in 14 years at the school he had never been disciplined before the five-day suspension.
"It’s nice to be vindicated," he told The Caledonian Record. "I thought I was going to win from the beginning."
Caledonia School Superintendent Martha Tucker, who recommended Warren’s firing to the school board, did not return a phone call seeking comment. She submitted her resignation on Jan. 26, and did not mention the arbitrator’s decision or misdemeanor charges she is facing in her letter. The charges accuse her of failing to report an allegation that a Danville High School teacher improperly touched a female student. The principal, who also faced the same charges, has had his case sent to court diversion.
