BENNINGTON — David LaChance, a veteran writer, editor and photographer, has been named news editor of the Bennington Banner.

LaChance began this week in the position. The Williamstown, Mass., resident was most recently editor of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car magazine with Hemmings Motor News in Bennington. Before that position, he was an associate editor with Hemmings Motor News. He started with Hemmings in 2005.

LaChance began in journalism as a reporter and later as news editor in a nearly 20-year stint with the Union-News and Sunday Republican newspaper (now the Springfield Republican) in Massachusetts.

"The Banner is thrilled that Dave LaChance has become its news editor," said Fredric D. Rutberg, president of New England Newspapers Inc., which operates the Banner. "Dave brings experience and maturity to the newsroom, plus he knows the Bennington community from his work at Hemmings. I cannot imagine a finer candidate for this position."

As news editor, LaChance will lead the staff in daily news-gathering operations at the Banner.

"I am deeply honored by this opportunity to join the Bennington Banner, and to work with such a talented and committed group of journalists," LaChance said. "Bennington and its surrounding towns are filled with great stories, waiting to be told. I'm eager to get to work, and to contribute to the Banner's long and proud history of service to the community."

LaChance will work with Greg Sukiennik, the managing editor of the Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal and Brattleboro Reformer, to boost the breadth and depth of local coverage, according to Kevin Moran, executive editor of New England Newspapers Inc.

LaChance can be reached at dlachance@benningtonbanner.com and 802-447-7567, ext. 115.
