Vermont's 2 US senators call for boosting senior programs

Posted

MONTPELIER, VT. >> Vermont U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy are among the signers on a letter calling for a significant funding increase for Older Americans Act programs such as Meals on Wheels in order to keep up with the needs of a growing population of seniors.

They've joined about 30 other senators saying that funding should increase by at least 12 percent to meet existing demand. And they say that demand is growing. There are now about 65 million Americans over age 60, and that number is projected to grow to 92 million by 2030, as about 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day.

The letter says funding for Older American Act programs has declined 7 percent since 2009.
