Vermont utility's energy center wins award

RUTLAND (AP) - Green Mountain Power's Energy Innovation Center in downtown Rutland is being recognized for its energy efficiency.

The Vermont utility says the Energy Innovation Center has been awarded LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The award recognized the building as a leading example of building for environmental and health performance.

The Energy Innovation Center uses air-source heat pumps, two solar arrays, small-scale wind, high-efficiency LED lighting, light tubes, triple-pane windows, efficient skylights and motion sensors to reduce artificial lighting needs.

The building also includes direct current to power lights, super-dense insulation to reduce heating and cooling needs, recycled rubber flooring and low-flow water fixtures.
